Mal Hewett sets 4 records at Bonneville in 2010
Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011Mal Hewett had quite a year on the salt last year. First, he went to Speed Week, and after making a rookie orientation run, Mal laid down a qualifying run of 151.033 MPH in the M-VG 1350cc class, almost 50 MPH above the existing SCTA record. The next morning, Mal backed it up with a run of 152.637, for a new record with an average of 151.835 MPH. After adding his very nice looking fairing to run in the MPS-VG class, Mal qualified at 156.863 into a 10 MPH head wind. The next morning, the back up run was 163.293 with a slight tail wind and pulling 6100 RPM, for a new record at an average speed of 160.078, again breaking the existing SCTA record by almost 50 MPH. After a little sightseeing, Mal returned to Wendover for the BUB Speed Trials. Unfaired, Mal ran 151.223 and 150.080 for a new record of 150.651, breaking the old AMA record of 121.795. With the fairing, Mal ran 162.692 and 161.317, establishing the AMA record of 162.004 in an open class.Way to go Mal, quite a banner year.

Sonny Angel and Willow Springs, late 1950s
Sunday, January 9th, 2011The man on the far right in the photo in the Red Rapides entry, Don Mathews, is a long time friend of my father, Frank Doherty. Don recently started to send me copies of some of his old Vincent photos, and he sent a set taken in the late ’50s at Willow Springs. Lo and behold, one photo has Sonny Angel’s support truck in the background. Sonny still has his motorcycle shop down in National City, near San Diego, and has been going to Bonneville each year along with his brother Don to help support Max Lambky with the Vincent Streamliner effort. Nice dustbin fairing on the bike.
No January meeting
Sunday, December 12th, 2010There will be no January meeting, due to New Year’s day falling on a Saturday, plus the Vegas auction the following weekend. Details on the February meeting will be forthcoming, possibly at Rob Arnott’s in Corona Del Mar.
Red Rapides
Friday, December 10th, 2010The upcoming Bonhams Las Vegas auction will be featuring a low mileage, fairly original, barn find Red Rapide, found in the Fresno area. I remember stopping by Hugh Darby’s place somewhere in central California, back in the ’80s, and he had a Red Rapide among his large collection. I’ve always wondered what happened to those bikes, and wondered if this Red Rap might have been his. I googled around, and found a few blogs with the same Bonhams info. One long time Vincent owner from Texas posted a comment on one blog, saying the bike couldn’t be all that original, since only the fenders and tank were red. I had to straighten him out, so I added a comment to say that it is pretty well known that not all Red Raps were all (or mostly) red. I know of many west coast Red Rapides that only had the tank and fenders red.
Here is a photo from the original LA Vincent club, on one of their club rides, and there are two such Red Rapides. The man in the middle, towards the back, still owns his to this day.
Cretin-NortonOC Swap Meet
Friday, December 10th, 2010Corina and I rode the Touring Comet to the swap meet at the Cretin clubhouse. What a great location. We got there towards the end, but we saw Mike and Liz. I heard a couple of other Vins were there earlier. Had a couple of nice conversations with Cretins, and a very enjoyable afternoon. We left and wanted to stop by Olvera Street for some taquitos, but can you believe the parking lots around there don’t allow motorcycles? What’s up with that?
