May Ride and Meeting in Redlands

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

A long but amazingly enjoyable day that started bright and early with a 8:45 AM arrival at Tom and Debbie’s place. Tom rode his Velocette as his Vincent stable is currently under construction.

Tom’s Velo

I will leave the specifics for newsletter, but here is a shot of the group gathering. Bill Easter’s Shadow is on the right and Greg McBride’s Series B Shadow is next going left. There are a few Velos and a few more Vincents farther to the left.

May Ride - Before

That’s me in the middle with my overalls in flux.

Not lot after we departed Derry had a gremlin pop up in the engine and although the bike would run, the sound it made was not desirable. Derry trucked his bike back to Tom and Debbie’s place to wait while we did a run to Idyllwild.

The ride was amazing. We were now separated from the bunch and it was just four in our group now. What a beautiful ride. The valley as we rose up. Then over the ride and into another valley. Then seemingly out of no where a small town. It looked like it was a town that had been frozen in time. Motorcycles everywhere. We relaxed a short while and then blew back down to the superslab and a great meal and meeting at the Gross’.

When we returned there we found that Bill and Derry had nearly field stripped  Derry’s Shadow in a search for the elusive gremlin. Bill had returned earlier with some clutch slipping issues not much farther into the ride then when Derry had turned back.

They had the Primary case off, the clutch disassembled and the generator disconnected.

Derry’s Primary

They also had the Timing case open and the current theory is that the issue may be related to the distributor.

Derry’s Timing

Here’s and after shot of the bunch.

After the ride

Two Rapides, two Shadows, a Velocette Venom, Shadow in the pickup bed, Bill’s Shadow lurking in the back of the drive.

Speaking for myself, it was a great day. I have been riding many years. Never have I seen the comraderie and friendship that the So Cal VOC show to each other. A bike breaks down and within two hours a group of club members already have the motor apart and are well on the way to finding the gremlin.

A truly special experience this Vincent one is.

BSA Hansen Dam Ride / Barry Smith Memorial All British Run

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Gosh it was a lovely day and Mitch Talcove and I arrived early to the lot. Here’s a shot of Steve Batesole and Mitch, Steve is in front of my Rapide and Mitch is in front of his.

Then as the clock neared 10 I had some concern that Bill Easter had not yet arrived. Lo and behold, there he was, nearly 10 AM, hands black and dirty up to his elbows. He got a flat en route. His CO 2 had run out and Dave Marshall had his small pump. Here Bill is explaining his situation to Mike Aleksander as Mitch and Dave Marshall bear witness.

Bill Easter explaining his circumstance

We lined up all the Vincent’s in attendance and we had seven Vincents: Tony Stefani’s Comet, Bill Easter’s 52 Shadow, Dave Marshall’s Rapide, Derry Naylor’s Shadow, Bill Melvin’s Shadow, Josh Bogage’s Rapide, and Mitch Talcove’s Red Rapide. A good group.

Seven Vincents

The Comet took off and the rest of us headed up to Acton, where we had a decent Mexican meal. The day was warm, but it was truly a beautiful one. A successful day all the way around from my perspective. Cheers, thanks to the BSA Club for hosting this major annual event that all Brit Bikers can enjoy.

April Meeting and Ride

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

We departed on a short pleasure ride through Griffith Park and up around the Lake Hollywood reservoir where we stopped to obtain evidence of said ride. Bill Easter and Doris Endo were on Bill’s Shadow, Dave Marshall rode Mitch Talcove’s Red Rapide. Victor Cohen was on his TR6 Trophy, and I was on my Series C Rapide.

We returned to my home in time to prepare for the gathering hordes. I would say we had a decent turnout which I am sure will be fully covered in the next newsletter. Here is a shot of two guys named Mike I was honored were able to attend.

Liz made some Easter eggs in since it was the Saturday prior.

It was a lovely day and I know I enjoyed myself.

Geoff Giammarco paint and metal repair

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Just before leaving Los Angeles, I had Geoff Giammarco repair and paint the petrol tank on the Comet.  It worked out nicely for the shipping since there was no trace of fuel in the tank.  A prior owner of the tank wanted to put a rear head on a Comet, and so the tank was modified to add a cutout on the right hand side.  Then a subsequent owner removed the cutout and patched it up to restore the original capacity and shape.  When I got it, it leaked pretty bad on the left side, and had a small leak on the right side.  Geoff worked some magic to fix the leaks and some other small damage and then painted and striped the tank, applied the latest club transfers with their revised artwork and colors and a clear coat, and polished it all up.  It looks absolutely fabulous.  Thanks Geoff for your excellent work.  You can contact Geoff at mcpaint111 at aol.com and 310-463-5021.

New Home

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

We finally moved into our home and received the contents of the shipping container on February 2nd.  Here are a couple of photos of the bikes inside and outside their new home.  After almost three months in their crates, I filled up the Comet with oil and took some fuel from the can used for the lawn mower, and the Comet started on the third kick, Peter Redmond was there to see them and hear the Comet run.  Now if I can find someone to take all of our empty shipping boxes and packing paper, I would have enough room to get around the bikes inside the garage, it is a pretty tight fit for now.

Ojai Ride with the Norton Club

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Mike proposed that we grab breakfast and meet up with the group at the destination in Ojai. So we went the the Hungry Fox and ‘fueled up’. Then we bombed up the 5 to 126 towards Santa Paula. It was a lovely day, a little chilly early but by noon it warmed up. We headed up the 150 towards Ojai and the rode twisted through hills that wound like ribbons. The Rapide did just fine. Running strong and smooth. Once at the ‘museum’ we met up with Greg McBride on his early B Series Shadow (48 I think, I will confirm) and Derry Naylor on his lovely C Series Black Shadow. Bill Easter was there on his C Series Shadow as well.

Mike and I stayed a while and Mr. Tagart, the owner of the Egli, came over to talk and tell us stories of years gone by in Ojai.

The collection was amazing, it could be a blog entry on its own!

We stopped at Bocelli’s on the way home for a nice warm meal. Smooth sailing.

Early Egli

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Way back in the 1980’s, I took these photos at one of the CAMA motorcycle shows.  The Egli section organizer, David Dunfey, says it has some original features that identify it as an early Egli, probably one of the first ten made.  Does anyone know of this bike or who would have taken it to a CAMA show?

Vincenteering in Ireland 1

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Here is the start of a new blog category, where I will try to maintain a log of the Vincent activity I can stir up here in Dublin, and also the rest of Ireland, with a little bit about the experience of moving to another country.

First, a quick recap.  Corina and I arrived on Dec first, and moved right in to the temporary apartment my employer arranged. It is a decent enough place, but it is in an area that we later found out is not so great.  After a couple of days off, I started right in at work the following Monday.  We had looked at rental listings before we left, and we knew that unfurnished rental properties are rare over here.  Even more rare are garages, so the combination was going to be tough.  What was even tougher are the listing agents.  We couldn’t get in contact with most.  We only actually had two or three agents show us a property.  Luckily, many property owners handle the listing themselves.  They were easy to work with.  We looked at a few properties that were either a nice house in a bad area, or a not so nice house in a good area, or the garage wasn’t included since the owner was storing stuff.  Then the holiday season hit, and the country comes to a halt.  We found a listing for what looked like a suitable place, but it wouldn’t be available for a yearly lease until April.  My company was only paying for one month at the temporary apartment, and we really didn’t want to stay there on our own dime for the reason mentioned plus a few other reasons.  Then, I noticed the ad had been updated, and it would be available Feb 1st.  We were having such a hard time viewing other properties, we decided to extend our stay in the temp apartment one more month.  The owners were really nice to deal with, and we made the deal.  We move in Feb 2nd.  Meanwhile, the shipping container with our belongings and motorcycles arrived January 6th, and cleared customs within a few days.  The contents are being stored, waiting to be delivered to our rental home the day we move in.

Now the interesting part, getting the motorcycles registered and insured, and getting a driving license.  It looks like I will have to go through the whole licensing process, written test, road test, provisional license, then full license.  The USA is not a country that Ireland recognizes existing licenses from.

I knew the names of a couple of Vincent owners here in Dublin, and had been in email contact with them.  One was spending most of December in Florida, so a week or so after arriving, Peter Redmond and I arranged to meet at a pub near our temp apartment.  Peter rode his Royal Enfield and we had a nice quick visit.

Jump forward past the holidays, and I sent an email to Henry Martini and Peter to see if the three of us could get together.  Peter said he would pick me up in his car and drive over to Henry’s, so last Saturday we did just that, and a fourth Vincent owner, Gerry Clarke, from the west coast near Galway, was there too, having ridden a modern BMW over to Henry’s.  After a nice lunch provided by Henry, we spent a couple of hours out in the garage admiring Henry’s 1300cc Vincent with disc brakes and a few other nice mods.  We will try to continue the get togethers every month or two.
