Off and Running, the First Meeting of the Year

 january-meeting-1.jpg

Well, I’ve only been attending these meetings for about 35-40 weeks now as opposed too some in the section who have been doing so for nearly that many years! I’ve enjoyed all the gatherings up to this point, but this was the most fun so far. Perhaps it was the venue as much as it was well attended.

The meeting was held at the section headquarters AKA Bill Easter’s loft and, speaking for myself,  I think that this made for a comfortable setting. I must qualify these remarks by saying that, all the meetings I have attended have been comfortable and welcoming, but there is was certainly less inhibition at the clubhouse and for those who have hosted other meetings I have attended please do not misconstrue my observation. All the meetings have been a blast, but the clubhouse affords a special experience. Considering that you must go through Bill’s home to access the loft and in doing so you pass a good deal of motorcycle literature, as well as actual motorcycle history below the loft. Suffice to say there are various motorcycles in addition to Bill’s Vincents.

The Loft provides a wealth of seating as well as a couple of bars to obtain refreshment. Of course there were many Vincent signs and even some evidence of  the Vincent’s record breaking abilities in the form of a Bonneville speed record certifications! I’m sure that the more one visits, the more one will see.

We had a good bit of food to help soak up the libation and we even held a meeting!

Initial plans for the years possible journeys and picnics, etc were outlined. Stay tuned to K 17 and this Blog for specifics when they become available.

Here’s a couple of pictures submitted as proof of these allegations. I seemed to get Bill Easter’s back each time and he was a superlative host as one would expect.

Afterwards, I had a constructive discussion with Mitch Talcove regarding the sorting of my Rapide (which is almost complete). I feel like this is only the beginning and I look forward to my continuing education.

The pictures do not do the gathering justice. If anyone has any pictures or anecdotes or both, please send them to me and I will disseminate them to the Section masses.

Here’s to a great 2012, it’s off to a good start so far!

Cheers

Ride for the Roses

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Burger Continental in Pasadena was the place to be this morning. I arrived a little on the late side, but not too late to see well over 50 bikes lining Lake St. Norton’s of course, but a far share of Ducati’s, BMW’s, Yamaha’s, Harley’s, Excelsior’s’ (well one at least).

roses-1.jpg

It was a beautiful Saturday morning and I know that Bill Easter and Steve Batesole were there on their Shadow’s. Mike A. was there on his Rapide.

I had rode my Triumph Tr5 as my Rapide is still going through a slight sort with the timing and wheels. Bill Easter shared my table at breakfast (which was amazing) and discussed current goings on. He had brought my new timing tool from Clever Trevor and in the course of our conversation he mentioned that he had assisted in timing another bike just this past week. Maybe if I figure out how to use the new tool I can help with this procedure.

Wes and Yolanda were on attendance as were many more. I will edit the post as I recall. I’m tired at the moment.

Enjoy and Happy New Year!

Here’s a picture of a Norton, Laverda, and a Triumph which was representative of how the block looked on both sides of the street!

I did not go on the ride so if there are additional pictures of stories related to it, please add them as a comment or send them to me and I will do so.

Shout Out to Stephen D.

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

BikeMike misses you already Steve and he asked me to upload a photo from our ride up the Ortega Highway last Summer. I say ride up because the photo illustrates the descent in the trailer. Fun regardless. BikeMike’s Rapide on the left, your Comet (Steve) in the center and my Rapide on the right. An envious load. Send us some pictures from your forays round your new home. Once the spring arrives of course.

CheersSteve D. tying down his Comet

Tom Andrus Restoration

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Many years ago, Tom Andrus purchased a Black Shadow basket case, and also a sidecar basket case.  Take a look at these before and after pictures.  Like the guy on the tv show American Restorations, Tom can restore just about anything.  He has worked on Ferraris, Maseratis, Model Ts, Packards, Rudges, Scotts, and of course Vincents, including a really nice Firefly, which Tom owned for about 30 years or so.  Oddly enough, the current owner of the Firefly can be seen taking a photo of Tom on the Firefly at the 1980 Bass Lake rally, the fellow in the black t-shirt, Glenn Shriver.

David Dunfey’s Grey Flash

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

Here are a couple of pictures of David and his Flash taken by Carleton Palmer II at the last Maxton land speed event.  Note the front brakes.  I asked David about them and here is what he says:

“The brakes are the 8″ brakes made by Hugh McAlister and sold by the Club. AHRMA allows me to use OEM style brakes up to 8.5″, so I decided to try them. They are pretty good for racing, although I suspect the 4 leading shoe conversion might be better. AHRMA does not allow 4 leading shoe brakes in Class C. The 8″ are more expensive than the 4 leading shoe, but for racing I feel you need to use new drums, so, in effect, the price is comparable. I had a rear brake drum shatter at Deland and although I have not had a hub shatter, others have, so I think it is good insurance to use a new one. A final advantage is that the geometry of the shoes appears to be correct. As has been discussed on the Forum, the Factory made a mistake when designing the original brake plates that makes the braking spongy.”

Dick Busby trophy winner for 2011/2012

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Congratulations to Steve Batesole and his 1953 mostly unrestored Black Shadow.  At our section picnic, the participants voted their answer to the question “Which Vincent would you most like to take home?”, and Steve’s Shadow received the most votes.  It is a very nice survivor bike, with a few period accessories like the locking twist grip, the headlight dimmer grip switch, and the crash bars.  The petrol tank has the original paint, although new decals and a coat of clear was applied, and both rims are replacements for the alloy rims that were on the bike when Steve obtained it, that is about the only cosmetic restoration work done.

Rollie Free

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Rollie and Margaret Free attended the 1980 Bass Lake rally, and at that time, Nick Pierce owned Rollie’s Black Lightning.  Nick drove out to California from New England with the bike, and Tom Andrus took some photos of Rollie reunited with his record setting machine.

Tommy Auger

Friday, July 29th, 2011

From John Hanson:

“Tommy Auger, a long time Vincent drag racer, has lost his long running battle with cancer.  I was fortunate to become friends with him after Dick Busby told me the Lightning I was restoring was the one Tommy rode to so many wins.  Even with throat cancer we learned to communicate all things ‘Vincent’ and drag racing.  He was a great inspiration and will be missed. RIP Tommy”

Rare Amal ‘tidy’ Bars

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Carleton Palmer mentions special Amal bars that some early Series A bikes had in his section review in the June MPH.  A few days later, Doug Sawicki of the Motor City section phoned me to track down information about an early Comet in California that has one of these rare optional setups.  I put Doug in touch with Chris McIntosh, and Chris kindly filled in some details and provided some pictures.  Turns out there are two variations, ‘clean’ bars and ‘tidy’ bars.  Carleton was describing clean bars, where the cables can be run inside the handlebars.  Chris has tidy bars, where the brake and spark advance both attach to a common clamp, and the lifter and clutch levers both attach to a common clamp.  It is possible to have both setups, clean and tidy.  Thanks, Chris, for sending these photos of your tidy bar setup.
